Recurve bow length vs. string length: how to measure correctly
A 25" riser with 68" limbs makes a 68" bow - simple, right?
So when you buy a string, you should get one for a 68" bow, which means a standard length of 164 cm (about 64.5"), not 68"!
Confused? Let’s clear it up 😉
AMO Standard (again!)
Like most archery measurements, bow length follows the AMO standard (Archery Manufacturers Organization).
This standard defines a consistent way to measure bow length so that all manufacturers use the same reference - and that’s very useful!
For example, a 68” bow doesn’t mean the bow physically measures 68 inches from tip to tip.
Instead, it represents a conventional measurement, based on a specific method defined by AMO.
Measuring bow length when strung

To measure your bow’s AMO length :
✅ Set the brace height according to manufacturer’s recommendations
✅ Measure along the back of the bow (outer side), not perfectly following the curve of the limbs
This method is only approximate, since you’re not following every curve, but it’s accurate enough to identify bow’s size.
Remember : a recurve bow is curved!
If you measure it straight across from tip to tip, you’re only getting a straight line - not the functional working length of the bow when strung and under tension.

Measuring bow length from the string

With your bow unstrung, you can also estimate its size by measuring the string:
✅ Lay it flat
✅ Measure its full length, loop to loop
✅ Add 3 to 3.5 inches to that number - and you’ll get bow length!
Example: a string that measures 159 cm (a bit over 62.5") + 3.5" = roughly 66".
Lengths to keep in mind
Bow sizes always increase in 2-inch steps (58", 60", 62", 64", 66", 68"...).
Whether you measure from the bow or from the string, your result will be approximate - but good enough to know your bow size.
