From aerospace to archery: how carbon fibre shapes Uukha limbs

✈️ What do an aircraft wing and your Uukha limbs have in common?

Much more than you might think!

In aerospace, every gram matters. Components need to be lightweight, withstand significant mechanical loads and maintain their properties over time.

These demanding requirements have played a major role in the development of composite materials, particularly carbon fibre.

But carbon alone doesn’t tell the whole story - there’s carbon… and then there’s carbon!

What really matters is how you use it: the choice of fibres, of course, but also their orientation, the number of layers, their position and how they are combined.

By carefully controlling all these parameters, engineers can give a composite structure very different mechanical properties depending on the forces it needs to withstand.

It’s this expertise in composite materials - inherited in part from the aerospace industry - that Uukha has been applying to archery for almost 20 years, developing for archery this unique technology: Monolith Carbon.

🏹 So, what does that mean on the shooting line?

As you know, traditional limb construction generally involves combining several different materials around a wood or foam core.

At Uukha, we chose a different approach.

Our Monolith Carbon limbs have no wood, foam or bamboo core. Instead, they are made from multiple layers of resin-preimpregnated carbon fibres, carefully arranged in a precise lay-up, then pressed and moulded at very high temperature to form one single, unified structure.

Why go to all this trouble instead of simply doing what everyone else does?

Because by precisely controlling the material and how it is distributed, we can focus on what really matters to the archer: reducing moving mass, increasing torsional stiffness, and achieving more stable, consistent limb behaviour.

A limb that is lightweight where it matters most - particularly at the limb tips - can transfer more of its stored energy to the arrow.

High torsional stiffness helps the limb stay aligned throughout the shot.

And a construction designed to withstand thousands of cycles helps maintain consistent performance over time.

Ultimately, it all serves one purpose: performance on target.

On paper, these are mechanical properties.

In your bow, they become something real, something you can actually feel:

- A fast, crisp arrow launch: to the point that you may need up to 4# more draw weight with other limbs on the market to achieve comparable arrow speed.

- A bow that remains stable and perfectly controlled, with a smooth draw and none of that “wall” feeling at full draw that you can experience with other brands.

- And above all, that very distinctive feeling of equipment that works naturally with your shot, rather than imposing itself on it.

Perhaps aerospace and archery ultimately share the same principle:

Performance doesn’t come from how much material you use, but from how intelligently you use it.

That idea lies at the heart of our philosophy - and of Monolith Carbon.

It’s part of what defines Uukha. And what makes us different.
